San Shou

Rising Dragon Martial Arts teaches three types of Sparring.

Street Sparring which can include drills, chin na, animal styles, multiple attacker, weapons, ground fighting, wrestling and much more.

Point Fighting which focuses on speed, accuracy, timing and distance.  We train usually for continuous rounds of point fighting.  This is often competed in tournaments with proper safety gear by students.

Both Street Fighting and Point Fighting are taught at the Saturday morning Sparring
classes from 11 - 12 and is open to adults of all styles and ranks (Kung Fu, Kenpo, & Tai Chi)

San Shou is full contact sparring and is therefore a sport like kick boxing.   However in Chinese Kickboxing  or San Shou, not only are full contact punches and kicks allowed, but also elbows, knees, wrestling and throws are also allowed.  Equipment includes only a boxing helmet, 16 ounce gloves (hands wrapped) and groin protection.  Pai Lum Tao uniforms include black shorts with a red stripe and a San Shou shirt.   Matches are usually fought in a ring and can last anywhere from 1 - 5 minutes (depending on the training or tournament) with usually a minute rest between rounds.

Sometimes we take our San Shou to a Lei Tai (great platform) that has no ropes and it is legal (in fact good for scoring points or ending a match) to throw your opponent off the 3 foot high Lei Tai stage.  Lei Tai competition includes using only 8 ounce gloves so they hit faster and harder.   In Pai Lum Tao and Rising Dragon Martial Arts we have fought in both San Shou and Lei Tai and have many world champions.

Some students take our San Shou Classes (Mondays from 6 - 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 - 12:30) because they want to fight full contact in the ring, but other take the classes not to make contact with others, but simply to improve their health and fitness by
the rigorous aerobic training and physical conditioning (similar to taking a kick boxing class at Ballys).

We have a full curriculum and ranking in San Shou.   This means learning specific proven material along with a conditioning program that starts for beginners who may have never punched, kicked or done a pushup in their lives.  After achieving a certain conditioning requirement and skills for the ring, they are tested and advanced to the next level.  In this way a student is always improving their health with goals and learning new skills.

San Shou Curriculum includes at each level:

Proper basics    Stances      Punches     Kicks         Swai Jow Throws

Physical Conditioning       Aerobic Conditioning    Chin na Locks & Holds

Grappling Techniques             Floor Walking Training       Round Conditioning

Fight Strategies & Theories        Proper Diet & Health Guides     Iron body training

Coaching Skills               Combination Techniques        Miscellaneous Fighting Skills

All of these areas increase in complexity and demand at each level.   The levels or ranks are denoted by a small patch sewn on the Sanshou Shorts.    The ranks are white, yellow, orange, purple, blue, green, brown, grey and black.  Watch some of SiGung Steve’s International  Lei Tai Fights.
